Blackout tattoo on the wrist

Thinking about getting a blackout tattoo on the wrist? Here is how well style and spot go together, what size makes sense, how much it hurts and how long it takes to heal.

difficult

Blackout needs room – wrist offers at most about 6 cm of width. The design would have to shrink a lot and lose what defines the style.

Is it a good match?

Bold lines forgive a lot, even on a spot with more movement. The design stays readable for years, even if the edges soften a little.

Black copes with sun better than colour, but on such an exposed spot it slowly turns greyish. Sunscreen is worth it here too.

What size?

For a blackout tattoo on the wrist, a width of about 2–6 cm makes sense. At the lower end that is less than half the width of a credit card, at the upper end about half to three quarters of a credit card wide.

Bold lines stay readable even at the lower end of the range – here you choose the size mainly by how present the design should be.

Try the size against your own measurements

How much does it hurt?

On the wrist, pain sits at about 6 out of 10 – high. For comparison: on the forearm it is about 3, on the hand and fingers about 8. On the wrist it sits in between.

With large pieces, the single needle stroke matters less than the duration: several sessions are common, and any spot gets more sensitive towards the end of a long session.

Pain values are our own rough assessment on a scale of 1 to 10, not measurements – every body feels it differently.

How long does it take to heal?

On the wrist, the surface is usually closed after 10–14 days; the skin underneath takes several weeks to fully renew.

Bold lines and large black areas mean more worked skin: expect the upper end of the range and noticeable peeling. Scratching during this phase is the most common cause of patchy spots.
