Japanese tattoo on the neck

Thinking about getting a Japanese tattoo on the neck? Here is how well style and spot go together, what size makes sense, how much it hurts and how long it takes to heal.

difficult

Japanese (Irezumi) needs room – neck offers at most about 10 cm of width. The design would have to shrink a lot and lose what defines the style.

Sensible width

Healing (surface)

Is it a good match?

Line weight and spot suit each other. Just avoid very tight gaps in the design – on a spot with more movement they tend to fill in over the years.

This spot is almost always exposed and gets a lot of sun. Colours fade fastest there – once healed, high-SPF sunscreen is part of the deal if you want the colours to stay vivid.

What size?

For a Japanese tattoo on the neck, a width of about 3–10 cm makes sense. At the lower end that is less than half the width of a credit card, at the upper end a little wider than a palm.

Bold lines stay readable even at the lower end of the range – here you choose the size mainly by how present the design should be.

Try the size against your own measurements

How much does it hurt?

On the neck, pain sits at about 7 out of 10 – high. For comparison: on the upper back it is about 4, on the collarbone about 7. On the neck it feels about the same as on the collarbone.

With large pieces, the single needle stroke matters less than the duration: several sessions are common, and any spot gets more sensitive towards the end of a long session.

Pain values are our own rough assessment on a scale of 1 to 10, not measurements – every body feels it differently.

How long does it take to heal?

On the neck, the surface is usually closed after 10–14 days; the skin underneath takes several weeks to fully renew.

Colour fills are packed more densely than plain lines, so the skin is more irritated afterwards and peels more noticeably in the second week. The colours look milky during that time – you only see their true brightness once the skin has fully healed.
